Network and telecom

A circuit's rate or status can change while its bill stays the same. Match each charge to the agreement, circuit record and dispute deadline.

Did the amendment rate reach the bill?

  1. 01Billing

The USF surcharge has a ceiling.

The FCC's Q4 2026 factor is 42.0% of interstate telecom charges. Internet access, equipment, late fees and intrastate charges are outside that base. Check which lines the carrier included.

  2. 02Billing

Carrier recovery fees are not taxes.

Verizon's Carrier Cost Recovery Charge is 4.73%. Lumen lists a 5.55% Property Surcharge and 7.50% Cost Recovery Fee. These are carrier charges. If your contract excludes them, flag them; otherwise, address them at renewal.

  3. 03Billing

A disconnect must follow the carrier's process.

Verizon requires 30 days' written notice through its portal. Emailing an account representative does not count. Keep the acknowledgment and check for charges after the valid disconnect date.

  4. 04Deadline

    Disputes have deadlines.

AT&T and Verizon require written disputes within six months. AT&T also has six months to bill a charge. Verizon requires notice within 30 days if you want to withhold the disputed amount.

  5. 05Deadline

Outage credits need a ticket and a claim.

Verizon's dedicated internet SLA requires a trouble ticket within 72 hours of the fault and a written claim within 30 days after it closes. Both dates matter.

  6. 06Avoidable

An expired copper contract can multiply the bill.

AT&T's Tennessee guide lists a DS1 local channel at $193 a month on a 12-month term and $14,634 off term. Term plans no longer renew there. Check each circuit's end date before it expires.

A circuit you have not cancelled can still be billed. Check charges after a valid disconnect, missed amendment rates and credits owed under the agreement.
